The Sacrament of Holy Matrimony is a sacred union between a man and a woman, viewed as a covenant established by Christ. It's not just an agreement, but a relationship between two persons, a public sign of total self-giving and commitment. The sacrament signifies the union of Christ and the Church, reflecting the profound love and unity between the couple.
We met 28 January 2022, at Strictly Soul, a nostalgic 90’s/
early 2000’s R&B and Hiphop party that was held at The Royale in Craighall. It was both our first times attending the event, which became so popular it ended up being a monthly party vibe that we enjoyed going to from time to time. I was khapharing my friend Thato, who loves to dance so I tended to take one for the team and get us drinks while she was glued to the dance floor.
Just as I was about to order, this
guy (who I’ve now come to know is Junior) offered to pay for our drinks if I order their drinks too, I obliged. Junior helped carry our drinks to the table for me and his friend followed…he’s been following me around since.
Kes
Aaaaah how can you say that?
Afika
Where is the lie?
Kes
There’s no lie.

How We Met

Our Favourite
Date
KES'S FAVOURITE DATE: 31 JULY 2022
Afika loves being outside and seeing beautiful places. My favourite date was day when we went somewhere she had said she’s always wanted to go - Rosemary Hill Farm.
We got to ride bicycles together for the first time and hike in a place/way we hadn’t before. It was especially fun seeing Afika ride a bicycle. During the hike/ride, we also came across a herd of cows and Afika told me about her fondness for cows and that memory stuck with me.

Our Favourite
Date
AFIKA'S FAVOURITE DATE: 3/4 December 2022
One of my favourite things about Kes is how he insists we go out and have different experiences. He had the great idea for us to go explore Harties, we had breakfast at that Eiffel tower from Temu place, which was cute shem. Then we went on the boat cruise, it was fun judging peoples houses and picking our favourites.
I love scenery generally but water scenery is the best! We had such a good day that the next day we decided to drive to Harties again and take the cable way to see the dam from up high, really beautiful view. I loved it so much I kept telling everyone to go.

How We Knew It Was Real
Kes – When a day couldn’t pass and I wasn’t thinking about her or wanting to spend time with her.
Afika – We were hanging out and I mentioned something about being single. This guy looked at me in shock and boldly asked – ah, so what is this then??
(Sirrrr??? When did you ask me to be your girlfriend??? )
He looked at me and said, so will you be my girlfriend then…I said no. Then I told him we should stop hanging out…days later, I wanted to go to a Bongeziwe Mabandla performance that I had meant to go to with him, I invited my friend Reba instead…Kes offered to drive us because it was raining, he even agreed to pick up my friend……I bought another ticket so he could atleast see it too…that night
I asked him to ask me again.
Engagement Story

HER STORY: JULY 2023
In February 2023, Kes asked if he could meet my family, I explained how in my culture, a girl doesn’t introduce a man to her family, he has to ask his uncles to introduce his family to mine and find out if they can build relations. He struggled with that, saying “But how will they know if I’m someone they approve of?”
It took me a few months to agree that maybe they should meet, by then, his mom was coming to South Africa for a conference and he suggested that he go with her and they all meet too. Around this time, he suggested we go on a hot air balloon ride and I looked at him suspiciously and asked if he was going to propose.
He frustratedly asked why I would ask that because it would ruin things? I was sure he was going to propose. So one day in July, when he took me to a random bush restaurant, I could never have expected that he was going to propose there!!
The proposal was on the banks of a river. Rivers have a deep spiritual significance for me, the location gave me a lot of faith, Kes doesn’t know that. All I remember was being so surprised…and asking him if this is the part where I’m meant to say yes…then I said yes.

Engagement Story
HIS STORY: JULY 2023
I had finally made the decision to propose to Afika, and after days of careful thought, I set out to find the perfect location in Joburg. After a bit of searching and finding out what she might like, I discovered a charming riverside treehouse that seemed like the ideal spot— just a short 30-minute drive away. I reached out to my good friend Jr. to secretly capture the entire moment, from our arrival to the proposal itself.
I was filled with nerves, so I did my best to keep things casual, pretending it was simply a romantic lunch date. Everything was arranged to make the proposal a complete surprise. When we arrived, we were greeted with welcome drinks. After we finished, I excused myself, saying I was heading to the bathroom, but instead, I snuck off to set up the proposal in the treehouse.
While I was “gone,” the waiter delivered a message to Afika, telling her I’d asked her to head to the “lunch spot,” where I would join her shortly while I got something from the car. (Note from Afika: this is when I got suspicious, he would never let someone else walk me to the table!) As she arrived at the treehouse, she was stunned to find a "Will you marry me?" sign and me waiting for her. I walked her up to the treehouse, got down on one knee, and asked her to marry me. After a brief moment of shock, she said YES!
We spent the rest of the afternoon by the riverside, enjoying a peaceful lunch together, savoring the moment and celebrating the beginning of our next chapter.
(Note from Afika: I’m surprised he left out the detail about spending the rest of the day chasing monkeys away from the treehouse and lunch table, he was so mad lol)
